7 for seven

7forseven_key-and-arrowLet’s face it // Mondays stink. Or at least we typically expect them to stink. That is why, every Monday, I post seven positives from the previous seven days of the week as a reminder of what I have so that the week starts out on an upswing. There is much truth in the belief that happy people attract good things, so it is important to start the week out right. Sometimes it’s the more grand, but other times, it’s the simple things.

I have to be honest, even if that makes me look ungrateful (I promise, I’m not!) — I’m busy, overwhelmed, but tremendously happy. I want to skip this week’s 7 for seven. In fact, I want to skip many 7 for sevens, but I’m going to hang in there until at least July when it’s time to renew the ol’ blog. Many changes are happening (mostly good changes), but it feels like something is in the air — something wanting to open up even bigger, if I allow it — and I’ve decided to allow it. I’m not sure what that means quite yet, but it’s time. Writing will never leave me — it will simply morph (‘simply’ seems like the wrong word). I can’t wait to figure out what that is and share that with you.

So — just a quick update for this week. Patrick and I had our WAREs opening party where he played a show with our T I M B E R + B R A S S objects on display with other makers and artists in Austin. We went out to dinner with a couple of friends before sending them off to their wedding in Kansas (so sad we can’t make it!!), and I’m nearing the end of the school year (hallelujah!). It’s been a good week, and it’ll be even better when this one is … well, the weekend. 😉

I hope to inspire you to reflect on all you have to be grateful & that your week brings you even more positivity + balance + bliss!  Feel free to share your seven with me as well / or even just a couple!

Have a wonderful week!

My slow Internet in this small town truly hates WordPress, but I need my 7 for seven badly tonight, so I’m fighting the loading-wait-time-battle with a few short paragraphs. I’ve spent the better part of the last couple weeks packing boxes, imagining better classroom management for these nearly all-boy classes (I’ll spare you my nightmare stories – trust me, this dynamic is layered, tricky, and frustrating – only burdened more by the vitriol they are hearing/repeating on Fox News and from our very own president’s mouth – sigh – deep breath).

Nevertheless, I have good things in my life, and it’s enough that I can see the light at the end of this tunnel. I’ve got the love of my life by my side, with a fun new business, and a new home on the horizon. I can’t wait for Friday, but I can totally wait for Friday… the boxes!! Eek. I never realize just how much I can do without until I begin to pack.

And I appreciate what I do have. For example, my family came to visit for Easter weekend, and my ambitious mother planned a brunch with extended family in between all the furniture painting and updates getting ready for their permanent move to the greater Austin, TX area after my dad retires soon. As always, it was a nice break to see them and spend time with the people who I love.

I’ll be back next week with a regular 7 for seven (fingers crossed) with my new Internet!!!! Yep, I often say, it’s often the small things…

Back again — taking a semi-break during the transition to a new place, sans decent Internet. It’s been a busy couple of weeks, but I am so grateful to have a new place soon (details coming soon!), an invitation to Patrick and I to share Timber + Brass (our new company) in an upcoming exhibit (also, more details coming soon!), and my two academic competition teams brought home six awards last Saturday. Woohoo! I’ll be back in one or two weeks with a much better update — promise! Love to all!

Between the last two weeks’ late posts, starting a new business, prepping for my school’s big state test this week, and now house hunting, I am completely wiped out. There’s a lot to be grateful for from this week — attending a tearful (from laughter this time) farewell dinner at one of my favorite restaurants with my boyfriend’s family, watching a fantastic movie with all the feels (go see Moonlight now!), hopping over to an impromptu lunch downtown with my boyfriend after a secret mission, and watching my boyfriend play a show at one of my favorite Austin bars with some of my favorite people. However, I’ve decided to simply write only a few things (much like this) for the next few weeks while I’m soon in the process of moving and having to cut my Internet — Typing from a phone is exhausting (finger cramps tell me I’m getting old) and formatting on a phone is next to impossible (my generation is completely showing). I’ll be here still every week with a brief summary to continue my gratitude practice, and then I’ll be back with a vengeance soon after!

1. Spring Breakin’ It. Per the yuge (that’s short for usual), I’m a day late and a dollar short. I’m the worst at actually getting anything done when I’m on a break from work. Forget that I have extra time — I’m on vacation! Well not really. I’m still in Austin, TX — in the midst of this chaos we call SXSW. But it’s fun. Really.

I started out the spring break with the expected farewell-for-now-happy-hour with coworkers, and then hit the ground running getting ready for Patrick and I’s on-line shop opening. Hence the late post.

2. Monday Night Out. These are three words I hardly ever see in the depths of my thirties, but I’m using them now because I’m not at all a boring adult.  Stop laughing.  I went out — ON A MONDAY night. My boyfriend was actually not playing a gig at the hours with which my head is under the covers, so I came out and enjoyed the beautiful brass sounds he makes.

3. International Women’s Day.  I couldn’t easily take off work on the #daywithoutawoman last week, especially the week prior to spring break, but I did show my support by wearing red and supporting only small women-owned businesses. It was lovely going to work and seeing both men and women wearing their red and seeing so many people across the globe showing their support in social media. In the middle of what feels like a national crisis, these times when people come together are extra soothing and reassuring.

4. Spring Break Event.  Thursday night, Patrick and I went to my twinkie’s event for her new dress line. She paired up with a friend of hers who owns a beautiful apothecary downtown and held a pop-up shop with some of her line’s accessories. The room was full of smiling faces, and it was great to see hers! I’m so proud of all the hard work she has done and will continue to do, and I’m excited to see what she comes out with when her dress line is fully ready and open to the public. She’s going to rock your socks – or stockings.

5. Rents In Town.  My parents are both in town for the first time since… Christmas?? Is that real? They are usually in town at least once a month, so it was really nice to see them after what is a long separation for our tight-knit family. We spent some time this past Saturday celebrating an early birthday with Patrick and catching up.

6. Old Pals.  It’s always a blast when my old pal, DJ is back in town from LA. He slid through town for a friend’s wedding, and then we had our usual obligatory booze-fest/catch-up sesh. Because reminiscing is always more fun with dollar mimosas.

7. Werk, werk, werk. Patrick and I are opening up shop, officially, on March 16, so I’m actually going to leave this here… and go work some more to get this puppy off the ground! We are so excited!!!

1. Had to. I’m starting this week out with something that made me giggle. Sometimes, we need to laugh a little because it beats the alternative.

2. March 16. I’ve bragged about him before, and I will brag about him again… my boyfriend is one heck of a talented woodworker and craftsman, so much so that I’ve persuaded him to finally open up a web-shop with all of his beautiful spoons, trays, instruments, etc. I’ve been heading up his social media campaign — check us out on our IG, Twitter, and/or Facebook account (all @timberandbrass). We launch on March 16, but you can take a sneak peek at the web-shop now, if you’d like! www.timberandbrass.com

3. Speaking of Launches.  Yes, this is turning into one big plug for the people I love (I can’t help myself!), but if you live in Austin, you must also check out my twin sister’s pop-up shop at Sabia. Her beautiful dresses aren’t yet out (coming soon!), but you can check out some of her Mister Wright accessories this Thursday from 5-7.

4. Sickies.  I have no doubt it’s in direct correlation to living in Texas — a state without true seasons, particularly this year, but Patrick and I were DISGUSTING this weekend. I’ll spare details, but at least we had each other…

5. Summer Bod.  Just kidding. I’m not even close. But I am getting clo-ser. I’m down nine pounds since I started to cut the stress-eating post holidays. Phew!

6. Sing-A-Thon.  I’m certain I’m outing myself here as a total dork-no-return, but I’ve probably already done that unbeknownst, so, meh… I’ve always said that there is not one person on this planet that isn’t weird in his or her own way, but finding a romantic partner is all about finding someone with your same brand of weird. Patrick and I definitely share that same brand. This past Sunday, we started impromptu singing while cooking and making up our own lyrics, faux-harmonizing (there was little harmony to it), and going from mo-town, to jazz scats, and operas. We had quite a blast — sometimes in tears from laughing in moments we caught ourselves totally indulging in our weirdness. It feels just like love.

7. Last Week Till Spring Break! Not going to lie — this has been the toughest year on me as a teacher since I started teaching nearly eleven years ago, and this teach needs a break. A long one. But this week will do. I’ll take it!

I hope to inspire you to reflect on all you have to be grateful & that your week brings you even more positivity + balance + bliss!  Feel free to share your seven with me as well / or even just a couple!

Have a wonderful week!

There is much truth in the belief that happy people attract good things, so it is important to start the week out right. Sometimes it’s the more grand, but other times, it’s the simple things.

1. Long Weekend. I’ve gotten into this bad habit of not writing my 7 for seven posts when I’ve had longer than a regular two-day weekend, but who can blame me? Technically, this is my Monday, and someone is not complaining.

2. Valentine. Tuesday night, Patrick and I decided not to join the crowds, and we cooked meatballs together from our new cookbook. We played records, drank too much wine, and lovingly laughed at each other’s idiosyncrasies in the comfort of home.

3. Learning Together.  Even though, of course, I was jealous of my students who had a five-day ski weekend (what kind of district does this!? – oh yeah, ours does), I was happy to have a couple of days learning from my peers and seeing the incredible things they are doing in their classrooms. This year, I presented as well, and even though I hate public speaking, I was proud of myself for conquering this fear/nightmare after years of shying away from it (yes, even ex-actresses hate being themselves in front of other adults, ha!). It went well (fingers crossed).

4. “Tequila Thursday.”  Our keynote speaker during the Learning Together conference joked with us that we really got together for teacher conferences to have a “tequila Thursday.” We laughed at how lame his joke was, and then went out for a tequila Friday. Whoops.

5. Timber + Brass.  My guy and I launched our shop website this week (sort of!), as well as our social media platforms to garner interest and show people what we’ve been up to. Come check us out on Instagram to see what we’ve done @timberandbrass We’d love your support!

6. Saturday Night Dining.  Patrick and I went out for an impromptu dinner Saturday night at one of our favorite restaurants in town, and then we had an impromptu photo-shoot on our way back to the car. Duh.

7. Juice Walk & Flower Pickin’.  We went on our regular Sunday stroll to our favorite juice spot in Austin (on Monday – ha!), and enjoyed the nice weather after a crazy storm the previous night. Patrick was one of those kids who stopped every five seconds on a walk to pick up flowers, rocks, and insects — and some things never change.
